Sophomore Year

Thisis an aptitude test given by the military to qualify for specific jobs within all branches.  All sophomore are asked to take it, and we use it as career awareness tool. It is very valuable for all students, not just those interested in enlisting in the military.

The assessment is given every fall, and results are distributed to students through a guided lesson that helps them interpret their own individual results.  In this way, they can make connections with how their strengths fit into potential career fields.  Student information cannot be used without permission by recruiters if the student is in 10th grade.

HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program)

Two sophomores will be selected to participate in the HOBY program, free of charge!  It is a great leadership conference that is offered to our students at Shippensburg University in May.  For more information click here.

Sophomores may take the PSAT 10 as practice for the SAT. PSAT results are very helpful to show areas of strength and weakness. The score report includes a code to log on to the College Board website for free practice questions customized to the student's individual test results.

If a student plans to participate in the PSU Mont Alto Early to College program in his/her Junior year, he/she is advised to take the PSAT sophomore year.

Sophomores do not take the PSATs for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  This applies only to juniors, so taking the PSATs sophomore year is great practice for taking them again in the student's junior year!

Sophomores can apply to attend Career Tech as Juniors and Seniors.  It is the last opportunity they have to attend Career Tech. Some programs can be completed in 2 years.  We provide an informational meeting with Career Tech staff in the fall.  If seriously interested, students can then sign-up to attend a field trip to the Career Center to explore two programs they are most interested in attending.  After the tour, students are given an application for admission.  Applications can be obtained in the Counseling Office.  Once the application is complete, they are scheduled for an interview with Career Tech faculty and their School Counselor.  Offers for attendance are provided in the spring.  To learn more about the Franklin County Career and Technology Center, click here.

Job Shadowing

Students can Job Shadow twice a year. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get it filled out.  After the form is complete, it is to be given to our Attendance Kimberly Schlegel Secretary, in the Attendance Office on B-Level so that the student is not marked absent the day of the job shadowing experience.
