Course Description:

S424                              Chemistry                                                                            Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite:  Algebra I or Geometry – “80%” or higher

Chemistry is taught on a concept basis and develops the theories of Chemistry and the applications of those theories. Topics include measurement and calculations, atomic structure and bonding, kinetic molecular theory, stoichiometry, and solution properties. Activities include lecture and discussion, demonstrations, and laboratory investigations. Students will be expected to complete daily assignments outside of class in the form of lab preparation activities, lab reports, and written homework.  Students will be assessed through tests, quizzes, lab reports, projects, written homework, as well as a midterm exam and final exam. Students must have a strong working knowledge of mathematics due to the extensive problem solving involved in understanding course content.  This course is recommended for students planning a two-year or four-year post-secondary education. The purchase of a scientific calculator is recommended.
