Modern Literature

Modern Literature is concerned with the forms and themes of modern and contemporary literature from 1980 to present day.  Emphasis will be on reading comprehension, academic and contextual vocabulary development, and written responses to particular works of literature.  This course also explores major works of current, popular literature in a variety of genres.  Reading, writing and discussion are at the heart of this class.  Students will be required to read novels outside of class.  This class may require you to borrow or purchase novels.

The course is 90 days in length and will be reading/analyzing the novel The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson for the first 40 days.

After that we will move to Literature Circles and students will have a choice of one of the following novels to read and analyze: Legend by Marie Lu; Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson; Fablehaven by Brandon Mull; Uglies by Scott Westerfield; Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs; Quarantine #1: The Loners by Lex Thomas; Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry; Glory O'Brien's History of the Future​ by A.S. King; ​Delirium ​by Lauren Oliver and ​Virals​ by Kathy Reichs

Students will also be reading and analyzing an independent novel.  (Student Choice MUST be 200+ pages in length and must be a novel.)
